You’ve heard of the IT bag, the statement shoe, the stand-out jewellery piece. Spring 2018 brought in the statement skirt. That one skirt in your closet that elevates your entire outfit. The best part? There are so many different ways to wear it too. I’m going to tell you how to style a statement skirt and how I styled this one.
Recently, Zara India started their e-commerce app and website. After crying tears of joy for my inner online shopaholic, I decided to do what any girl would do. Browse and go on an ‘add to wishlist’ spree.
The Gondola print skirt caught my eye instantly. If you’re new, I absolutely love statement pieces and one-of-a-kind finds. So I swooped in with glee and ‘added to cart’ almost instantly.
The split skirt is a summer favourite by now. There are all kinds, from the single ankle slit, to the bolder double slit ones. This is a double slit skirt that lets you feel a little breeze. I’d caution against wearing it on a windy day though, or it might get too breezy for comfort.
How to Style A Statement Skirt
When I got around to styling it, I wondered. How to style a statement skirt this fun? I rummaged through my (overflowing) closet and found this pretty crop top. Anouk once did a collaboration with Disney and this is from that collection. It’s got cute little Mickey silhouettes all down the front.
Summer in Bangalore is nothing like summer back home in Delhi. It’s when the flowers are in full bloom on every tree. When light summer showers lead into thunderstorms and everything is green and beautiful. When evening walks and piping hot tea become the norm.
On one of these lovely summer evenings, we took a walk through Koramangala and came upon this lane.
- The key factor you should know is colour. Your statement skirt is the highlight of your outfit. So try to pair it with something that picks out a colour from it. Here I’ve picked out the pretty magenta from the buildings on the skirt.
2. Keep all other parts of your outfit simple. Remember, your statement skirt will steal the show!
3. Choose a colour theme that is in sync with your statement skirt. I decided to go with a pastel theme for the rest of the outfit!
4. Let your accessories stay minimal and let your outfit do all the talking!
