Can I tell you a secret? After the age of 5 I’ve never celebrated Holi. Yes, really! Not in the proper way at least. That holi was memorable for many reasons including the fact that my brother and I drank bhaang thinking it was free milkshake, got home covered in colour and giggling like maniacs and slept for over 24 hours after that.
My confused identity may have something to do with it – after all I’m a South Indian who was born and brought up in Delhi. Holi isn’t celebrated in the South, and the premise of ‘asuras’ and ‘raakshases’ has its root in some rather racist stereotyping by the (mostly) light skinned North Indians to the (mostly) dark-skinned South Indians. So my parents never really had any interest in it, though mom was brought up in Rajasthan. Every Holi we’d lock up the gate and go about our business while we heard the neighbours and others having fun, running around and playing with every colour from the rainbow. I never really had the FOMO about it, but I did wonder how much fun it would be to just let go and plaster ourselves in bright colours to celebrate Spring. As I grew older and so did the neighbours, my interest waned and finally much later I thought I was too old.
Boy, was I wrong. Age is random. You’re never too young or too old to have fun! So this year, as I came to realize how much colours mean to me in fashion, I decided to play with colours and express myself in the form of a fun photoshoot.
There was lemony yellow. Fiery red. Hendrix-esque pink. Forest Green. Fizzy Orange. I tried by taking a pinch and hesitantly dabbing it on to my face. Of course that wasn’t enough. So Arjun decided to pitch in. I shut my eyes and just THREW colours in every direction on my face with him – this was the result.
We laughed. And I fully embraced the craziness of it all as he shot frame after frame. It was almost liberating, as I let the colours wash over me.
To me, Holi now is my reason to celebrate colour, and celebrate life.
Happy Holi to all you wonderful people. I’d say don’t be afraid to use every colour in the box and beyond when it comes to style! Hope you have a safe and wonderful celebration.
