It’s pretty much a fact that there’s no such thing as too many shoes. The inside of my shoe closet will testify to this – shoes make your outfit what it is, and they’re just so much fun to try! From pretty flats to towering heels, there’s always one pair for every mood. But then sometimes, it’s tough to find the right fit. Whether you have big/small feet, or a certain shoe shape that doesn’t suit you, or need more cushioning, it’s difficult sometimes to find the right fit.
Shoe shopping for me at a size 41/42 tends to be super difficult. It goes like this. I see cute shoe. I ask for price of cute shoe. I then ask for my size in cute shoe. Then I prepare to be very disappointed indeed when they tell me that no, it’s not available in my size. However, they say, as if that’ll make me feel any better, we have these. And they point to some of the ugliest horrors I’ve ever seen in my life, masquerading as shoes. Sigh. At which point I give up and go about ordering shoes online, from brands like Dorothy Perkins that stock international sizes like mine.
Wouldn’t it be great if we could just get them made to order like it was in the old days? There’s two things I’ve always wanted in life – a closet organizer a la Cher in Clueless, and a shoe designer software that gives me the shoes I want in real life.
Fortunately, I’ve found something that comes pretty close, with Talons D’Or. The website greets you with a collage of so many types of shoes and here’s what they have to say about themselves:
“At Talons D’or, we all come to work everyday with one simple objective to make your perfect shoe, exactly the way you want it, in the best way we can. Our idea of “making your own shoe” stems from the fact that each woman is Unique.”
This sort of convinced me that something is definitely right if they understand this basic fact, which a lot of shoe manufacturers don’t. But then that’s the difference between something that’s made to order and something that’s store bought. When you click on ‘Start Designing’, you can choose heel height, from flats to stilettos, and then you’re taken to a page that has a mockup of a plain white shoe, and a host of customizations on the right. The best part? If you don’t want the whole shoe to have the same colour you can even play around with different customizations for each and every part of the shoe. Choose from glitter, glossy, suede, matte, woven and a lot more for the colours and textures. They have sizes from 35 to 42 covering a range of sizes and also have a made-to-measure option.
I’ve always wanted purple heels so I got to customize my own set of shoes! I started with pointy toes, a medium heel, and purple suede as the material. Here’s what they looked like!
While I wasn’t too thrilled with the length of the toes (they narrow a lot which makes them tighter to wear) they looked pretty damn fabulous. It took about two weeks for them to arrive, with a lovely note inside which said: “There’s one thing common between you and this pair: You both are unique. Thank you for being awesome and making your heels as amazing as you!”
So the next time you want to get creative and customize your own shoe, try out Talons d’Or here! You’ll love how much control you have over how your shoes look as you become your own shoe designer. You can also choose readymade shoes from their gallery. Let me know if you try it out!
