If I open my lipstick drawer right now, chances are it’ll have some 98598757 red lipsticks. Of course I exaggerate 😛 but well, you get the drift. Red is a classic shade, and honestly no matter how much you try, you can’t help but pick up a different shade of red each time. The perfect matte red lipstick can work wonders for just about everyone, no matter what occasion you’re looking at. When I saw the NYX Simply Red Lip Cream then, with so many different shades of red, I knew I had to give it a try.
The NYX Simply Red Lip Creams consist of 6 shades, I’ll be reviewing 3 shades from the range – Maraschino, Candy Apple and Seduction. Here’s a bit about the range from their website:
A classic red pout never goes out of style! Our Simply Red Lip Cream collection gives you loads of color options varying from deep bright or pure red that you can’t go wrong with.
Ingredients: Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Ozokerite, Talc, Methyl Methacrylate Crosspolymer, Polymethylsilsesquioxane,Octyldodecanol, Isohexadecane, Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax/ Cera Carnauba/ Cire de carnauba, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax/ Candelilla Cera/ Cire de Candelilla, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance/ Parfum, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter Extract
Packaging: The NYX Simply Red Lip Cream comes in a retractable stick format with a transparent cap, much like the Clinique Chubby Sticks that in a way started the trend.
Texture: Ok so this is both a pro and a con. The actual product stick is very velvety and creamy in texture, so the moment you touch it you end up getting product, very pigmented, on to your skin. While applying the lipstick, it’s super creamy and smooth and very easy to get on in a single swipe. Tip: Use a lipliner before you apply it and it’ll look terrific and well put-together on your lips. I like the fact that these don’t have that glossy, thin texture that most of these stick formula lip products tend to have. They’re not sheer; they give great colour payoff that’s very close to actual lipsticks. It also doesn’t feather or settle into fine lines and stays put for a really long time, even after a meal or a drink. If you’re eating a burger or something similar be careful though, you might end up getting product on the food and that’s when it tends to fade off slightly. For all normal meals though, you’re safe. Basically, it does transfer on to things, but that doesn’t make it fade from your lips. Hope I’m making sense.
The one thing that I didn’t like was that the stick part of the product ends up separating from the packaging and falling out of the tube so you end up fumbling around doing your best not to waste it. The tiny stick of colour fell out of both my Maraschino and Candy Apple tubes and so I always have to be extra careful when using them, not to drop it again.
Maraschino: Maraschino is a pinkish red shade with blue undertones – similar to MAC Cardinal and also somewhat close to Maybelline MAT5.
Candy Apple: A gorgeous fuchsia red true to its name – it’s dark, almost a carrot red with a hint of deep pink and is close to Kat Von D Berlin and MAC Ladybug. I’m wearing it above outdoors and indoors in natural light.
Seduction: This one’s a delicious orange toned red – can think of Maybelline MAT2 and a shade from Chambor liquid lipsticks that I can’t seem to recall at the moment, will update soon.
L – R: Maraschino, Candy Apple and Seduction
All in all, the NYX Simply Red Lip Cream range is something you should definitely try if you love creamy long stay formulas and if you’re a fan of red like I am. The six shades are similar yet the subtle differences make each of them unique.
- Beautiful shades
- Highly pigmented
- Soft and creamy
- Great staying power
- Does not dry out lips
- Product may fall out easily
- Transfers easily
- Not readily available everywhere
I feel the pros totally outweigh the cons of this one. Don’t expect non-transfer features, but do expect gorgeous colour on your lips that will last you a long while.
So the next time you’re planning on a red lipstick, try something different and go for the NYX Simply Red Lip Creams instead. They’re great to own.
